Pretty With Plume: Avo Robusto

The white powder and specs you see is what becomes of the oil when they come through the cigar and reach the surface. Very pretty with “plume” indeed. This is a result of proper aging and signifies a cigar that is in peak condition to be smoked- perfect!

So delicious, if you ever come across it be delighted and appreciate every moment of it. I am greatly looking forward to this smoke, and was so excited when I saw it that I had to share this with you first.

  1. Love this site!! I just added you to my blogroll. You have great taste in cigars AND cocktails. Two subjects near and dear to my heart.

    Cheers!!

  2. How long did you age that cigar? It definitely is a beautiful sight to see . . . Plume.

  3. CigarSmokingMan- so delighted that you do and a pleasure to have you over here! I appreciate it and indeed they are subjects quite dear to me as well. Love the videos and hope you keep them coming.

DaByrdman- a fortunate discovery directly from the shop, we went through the others available there to see if there were more. I was delighted with the one and returned home with it immediately. Would imagine they don’t last for sale too long when they are in such a beautiful condition as this.

    xx

  4. Great write-up on these cigars. Someone should seriously do a write-up on the dos and don’ts of plume vs mold. Most of my customers, even some of the most seasoned smokers, don’t know the difference!

    Thanks,
    J Smith

  5. That is actually not plume (or bloom), that is mold. Probably formed because of over humidification. Humidity levels should be between 60% and 70%.

Plume does not group up into small white dots on the cigar, instead, It looks like some one lightly dusted the cigar in fine sparkly dust.

Even though it is mold, it’ is still smokeable. Just wipe off the mold gently with your hands or with a cloth.

  6. Thank you, Jimi-

I agree humidity levels should always be kept between 60-70, I don’t let mine exceed that and have had it tested to confirm accurate readings (It is a service most cigar shops will be happy to do as a complimentary service- highly recommend it).

Glitter for whatever reason doesn’t show up on my camera, (I’ve had this trouble with eye make-up even, just looks matte), which is what the crystal powder/dust reminds me of.. there is a thin coating all around the cigar but my cameras miss it (am hoping when I find another my new HD camera will do well).

The white spots on this one weren’t fuzzy and at the slightest touch vanished into a crystal-like powder- they even had that glitter shine as well. I’ve had some others without any spots at all with just the glitter-like coat, but on camera it didn’t show. I do think it is best to look for the glitter over the spots, but I didn’t have any trouble with this one.

  7. Hi Teresa,

First thank you for putting all the information together with a great perspective.

I do have to agree with Jimi on this call. Often times, people will assume if it’s white on the wrapper, it’s plume. I’ve made this mistake a few times myself. I’m going to point you to two articles on a very respected site. I hope this helps shed some perspective on the difference between mold and plume.

The following link has a good capture of plume on an original release Opus X. You have to rely on the flash to bounce light off the crystaline structures to capture the image.

Don’t stop what you’re doing. I’m enjoying the format of your site….

As they say down south…. Keep on Truckin’
