How Far Do You Smoke Your Cigar?

cigar chick

For me, I smoke my cigar until the tips of my nails can no longer hold on- down to the cap. The very end of the cigar is my favorite and I like to take my time as I enjoy it. You know a cigar is a great one when it lasts you this long and doesn’t have any heat to the taste, just a nice beautiful finish.

It is the part I look forward to equally as much as the first draw. When everything comes around full circle, the transitions have been made, and the story comes to a close it is pure, delicious enjoyment.

It may not be every single cigar I do this with as some don’t have that finish I’m looking for. But when a cigar is great, sometimes you just don’t want it to end. And I’ll enjoy it to the very last moment, whenever or at whatever length of a cigar that may be. Some come sooner than others and when that last draw happens you know the experience is complete. It’s a beautiful thing.

But maybe I am on my own here. How far do you enjoy smoking your cigar?

to the very finish of the cigar

  1. It all depends on the taste and the heat. If there is almost no heat and the taste is good, I will grab a toothpick to smoke it down to 1/2 inch or less. If the cigar gets hot or has become harsh in the final third, I will not bother forcing myself to smoke any further than the point it starts to get hot and nasty.

  2. You described it perfect..all the way to the cap IF its the finish that I’m looking for…sometimes a cigar may get tossed at two inches….if they are horrid, or it gets smoked to ashes! Nice nails btw..and that’s a great all natural nubbing tool :) I have to use other items.

  3. I ussually smoke them to about an inch long, unless they are too hot, which ruins it.

  4. I enjoy smoking a great tasting cigar down to an inch or 1/2 inch which is dependent on the smoke being cool on the palate (totally agree with Roberto). My experience seems to show that the very last bit of a cigar can have a strong contrast in flavor than the first 3/4′s of the smoke. Last night was a good example; I really enjoyed smoking a toro Joya de Nicaragua Clasico; the first 3/4′s was a rich creamy smooth medium body with notes of cedar and an interesting rosemary herb-like flavor but the last 2/3′s turned incredibly sweet…. it was great smoke to say the least but if I put it out with 2 1/2 inches remaining, I would have missed the best part. Beautiful photos Teresa, Thanks again.

  5. Nothing irritates me more than giving a cigar to some schmuck that smokes two inches of it and then puts it out. I smoke mine until there’s nothing left to hold.

  6. Bill> I know what you mean!!!
I too love to smoke till the very end, there’s just so much flavour at the end.

  7. Definitely agree- you don’t want to smoke it hot just to smoke it. But when you get to the end and there is no heat it is a beautiful thing!

And Bill, that’s the worst. If someone does that it makes me never want to give them one again… no appreciation for the gift or the greatness of the cigar. Fortunately it happens extremely rarely in my experience and I hope the same has been true for you.

It is the greatest thing to see someone enjoy a cigar you give them all the way to the very end- I do love that!

  8. I smoke mine until I can’t hold it anymore. Nails do help but you have to be careful with the acrylic ones like I have. Try explaining melted tips to the nail technician! A couple of times I’ve had to re-light near the end and have singed fingertips and eyebrows, but so far so good, no serious damage, LOL.

  9. That’s awesome! LOL. I haven’t had acrylics in a long time, it never even occurred to me that they may melt, that’s too great. But yikes, watch out on the eyebrows! Some of those burner-like lighters with the big open flame have had me concerned for just that reason. Be careful, love! And keep enjoying your cigars to the end, soooo beautiful! nom :)

  10. Well like everyone else, it depends. When I’ve had a cigar with great taste and flavor, it only got better as it burned. So if the cigar is great, I’ll definitely smoke it until it’s burning my fingers. Unfortunately it’s rather difficult to re-light or purge a cigar that’s gotten down to a nub. I’ve almost burnt off my goatee as a result, very frightening.

  11. A cigar is the only time when “hot & nasty” is not a good thing! Personaly I like to leave an inch, only reason is 95% of my smokes are churchill sized. And the ring gauges make them look like commercial broom handles. LoL ;)

  12. Generally, I smoke to the band.

  13. I will smoke a Padron Cortico all the way past post-nub stage. I also have smoked my Gurkha Micro Batch T PB 1 down like that. There is something about these two cigars that make me wanna holla and I just keep on smokin’ until there is no more cigar. Times like these an alligator clip is in order, something to hold the burning nub! I like hot and good!

  14. No burning of the goatee, nails, or eyebrows please, lol. Geez, I know I’ve come a little close to unexpectedly trimming my bangs before. Practice with caution :)

You can never go wrong with Padron, Rasheedah! I love your excitement, I think it is fabulous :D We all need cigars that leave us with such a great reaction every time. The Tatuaje Noella (and Noella Reserva) and Padron 1964 are a couple for me. Avo Companero is getting higher on my list too, I love that cigar. I have my favorites but I try everything I can, makes me appreciate them more and find new loves.

    xx

  15. Yes! I thought I was out of Padrons but I have two left. I haven’t had a Padron 1964 yet or a Tatuaje so those are now on the list. I haven’t been smoking long so I am always anxious to try different cigars. Any cigar that makes it to the post-nub stage will be added to the “favorites” list!

  16. If it’s a good or great stogie I will smoke it to the nub- a stainless steel martini olive pick works great for keeping your fingers safe! If it’s just ok or if the flavor has disappeared then I stop at the band.

  17. @Stan~thanks for the information about using a stainless steel olive pick…I saw a stub holder on youtube that looked like miniature weapon of destruction!lol! I like to have some finesse even with a stub!

  20. The shortest I have ever smoked was down to an inch or so. At this point, I start feeling the heat on my tongue and it is no longer enjoyable. This is usually when I notice a significant change in taste as well.

  21. I am the lone disrespecter of the cigar, I smoke a little more than halfway, rarely to the
1/3 mark. I am not a fan of harsh, tarry ends. Which when you think of all the time and
care that goes into making the cigar, is kind of a shame. But to the band, for me, is a
somewhat common, to the nub is rare. I smoked a RyJ reserve Maduro yesterday for
an inch and tossed it. Where was the flavor?
